History of Italian
Ceramics
Italian ceramics of the type that we offer at Bella Italia are called majolica
(or maiolica in Italian). This process was developed in the 6 th century by the
Arabs, who discovered that glazing ceramics with a mineral oxide mixture would
make them impervious to water once fired.
Then the ceramics could
then be decorated and fired again to produce beautiful, smooth pieces with characteristics
much like porcelain. As the Arabs moved westward into Italy, the Italians referred
to the ceramics as Majolica because they thought they originated on the island
of Majorca. Actually, the ceramics were only shipped through the port of Majorca.
Majolica making in Italy dates to the 13 th century and one of the early centers
of the new art was Orvieto in the Umbrian region. These early works were primarily
utilitarian and were decorated with abstract and geometric patterns. In the 15
th century, the patterns started depicting people and animals. By the 16 th century,
the Umbrian region, especially Deruta, has established itself as a major majolica
center. It became popular to have dinnerware designed with the family crest.
Before the advent of majolica dinnerware, food was served from large wooden plates.
The art of majolica continues today in much the same way as it originated.
Pieces are made and decorated by hand, making each piece a unique work of art.

Our Ceramics
Bella Italia travels to Deruta, Italy to find the best artisan for each piece.
We have a mixture of ancient patterns and contemporary pieces that will complement
any home. We buy from several different companies to offer the best selection
and the best quality available. Most of the companies we are associated with
also do custom work for our customers. Whether it’s a unique shape or size,
or a unique pattern that you’re looking for, come and talk to us about
our custom design options. All work is hand made and hand painted once we order
it. The emphasis is on quality, not mass production. It may take a little longer
to do it this way, but the results are well worth it.
